On November 5th, 2016, Farscape is leaving Netflix. Here’s why you need to watch it before then.

What it is.

Farscape ran from 1999 to 2003 (when it was stupidly cancelled) and concluded with a three-hour miniseries called The Peacekeeper Wars in 2004.

What it’s about.

This guy!

His name is John Crichton. He’s an astronaut who gets shot through a wormhole and ends up on the other side of the galaxy. That’s when he meets these guys:

All of them become fugitives on the run from the Peacekeepers (uh… think space Nazis). So while John is trying to figure out how to get back home, he’s also figuring out how to survive on the other side of the galaxy where everything’s nuts.

Why you should watch it.

The short version: did you like Guardians of the Galaxy? Farscape is basically the TV version of Guardians of the Galaxy. The lovable rogue characters, the crazy antics, the found family aspect… it’s all there.

The longer version (under the cut to avoid dash clutter):

get to know me meme | [2/5] favorite male characters - John Crichton (Farscape)

Ah, screw it. But I am not Kirk, Spock, Luke, Buck, Flash or Arthur frellin’ Dent. I’m Dorothy Gale from Kansas.

Probably the only male character who managed to avoid the dreaded Man Pain. He was in pain a lot of his televised existence, but you saw WHY. His pain didn’t drive his journey; it destroyed it. His curiosity and wonder and desperation drove his journey. He wanted to go HOME, more than anything else. But he managed to build himself a new one. He was damn near destroyed by his drive to “get home”, but in a stunning turn, the narrative showed him that he’d outgrown what he remembered. All those choices and damage and connections he forged grew him up. And in the end, HE CHOSE to leave Earth and everything it represented behind. John Crichton isn’t defined by his pain, nor is he motivated by it. He’s defined by his choices, and that is what makes him so much… more.

#john crichton #i also think he is made so much more by his approach to masculinity #i know i am harping on this a bit #but it’s so refreshing #remember when we were all overwhelmed with raleigh from pacific rim? #john is four seasons of that plus wormholes #like. he actually makes masculinity look attractive #because it’s not threatening or dangerous #(he can be threatening or dangerous but not by virtue of his masculinity) #rather his masculinity is nurturing and protecting and caring #and that’s usually coded as femininity but this show illustrated that could be masculinity too #he is a breath of fresh air and i already miss him (via @ladytharen)

@jenndoesnotcare!

ALL OF THIS I love this stupid character so much 😩

This is mainly for the sister's benefit, but in the unlikely event that anyone else is wildly curious about the contents of my wardrobe:

NEW BOOTS!

Something about the combination of a sale, last pair in the store, and they just so happen to fit clearly makes me a rabid materialistic consumer. Yay! ;DDD

Also, [livejournal.com profile] janie_jones_ clued me into the AWESOME fact that Chuck airs on Sunday nights here this season instead of on Mondays. HECK YES, CANADA. But way to chip little bits of my heart away, show. *tears*

Without getting into spoilers, I see similarities between Chuck's storyline this season, and what John Crichton was going through in Farscape. (Hear me out) They both started as these bright, but very innocent guys, and through their journeys in space/spy life, they've had to toughen up and tarnish their souls a bit. And it's necessary to survive, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt to watch it happen. *siiighs* OH CHUCK. &hearts &hearts &hearts

(And hey, also this applies to Richard! And um... this is a really common hero trope thing isn't it? Shh.)

Things I should be doing: studying for my exam tomorrow, working on my poster presentation for wednesday, starting my essay for next friday.

Things I am doing instead: making Farscape picspams. But I can't help it! It is my default major procrastination show. And the pretty, you guys! I will never get over it.

Farscape - 3x22 - "Dog with Two Bones" 'Do you love Aeryn Sun?' 'Beyond hope.' 'Then don't make me say good-bye and don't make me stay.' )

Okay, I swear I'm going back to work now.

I'm going through my yearly Farscape Renaissance right now, which, funnily enough, usually coincides with the busiest time in my school year. But no matter! For this show is pretty, and witty, and crazy, and fun, and heartbreaking, and romantic, and wonderful. And just happens to have muppets. Anywho, I was watching some of my favourite season one episodes, and lo and behold, have decided to grace this LJ with a picspam. *g*

1x11 - 'Til the Blood Runs Clear )

I've also been listening to FAR too many dvd commentaries with Ben Browder and Claudia Black, but it's really, REALLY, hard not to fall in love with them both whenever I do. They're both hysterical, both passionate and intelligent, have so much love for the show and obviously so much love and respect for each other. Kinda just makes me wish Farscape had gone on forever.

*holds out for webisodes*

Also -- The Office! I really liked last night's episode, so much so in fact, that it almost made up for there being NO PUSHING DAISES THIS WEEK. Almost. But I just kill myself anytime Jim and Dwight form any kind of alliance. It's wonderful.

*huggles Office writers*

So thank you, television in general, for key distraction time in this essay-ridden part of the year. It's awesome.

...I think I'm going to go watch Little Dorrit now.

SO VERY EXCITING, YOU GUYS.

FARSCAPE SEASON FIVE IN COMIC BOOK FORM

They start from where The Peacekeeper Wars ended AND they will tie directly into the upcoming webisodes.

This is maybe more exciting for me than even the Buffy comics. BUT IT'S FARSCAPE!!! FARSCAPE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!

Hee.

This is my fiftieth icon post! Neat, huh? While I'm not going to claim I've exactly mastered the art, it nice's to have the proof that I have improved. (I'd like to thank my early Microsoft Paint days, and Paint Shop Pro for teaching me about that pesky resizing thing, and Photoshop for always labelling your colours...) Yay for 100x100s!

You know what I love? Picspams. Specifically, Farscape picspams (because, have you seen the pretty that is this show??). Specifically - John and Aeryn picspams. Kissing. Smooching. Snogging, what have you. YEAH. So, check out this WONDERFULLY BEAUTIFUL picspam of teh John/Aeryn by [livejournal.com profile] aetenae. I think all the kissing made my heart explode. *g* Ben and Claudia locked lips a LOT!

I now need to rewatch some Farscape. :D

Also - Thanksgiving weekend! Yay! I had my first of two Thanksgiving dinners last night at a friends house - about 15+ students eating amazing food that we all made and drinking wine and having a good time. And I mean it about the wine. I came home sloshed, and very nearly made a drunk!post, so be thankful I saved the world from that. ;) Tomorrow we're going to dinner at my roommate's cousin's, and I'm making pumpkin pie for the first time (aiee!) but I'm really looking forward to it. We're planning on playing Harry Potter trivial pursuit so... *g*

And then on monday I should probably start doing work. Condsidering I have an essay coming up. On Plato and Aristotle, who I don't understand at all. So that should be fun. ;)

Anyway, have a happy holiday weekend everybody! I wish you the best family/friends fun time, good food, and much happy tryptophan-L induced drowsiness!

P.S. New Robin Hood starting tonight! Whee, I can't wait for the cheese!

So my phone and Internet that were supposed to be hooked up on the 20th, still do not work. It was installed on Thursday like it was supposed to be, and heck! It even worked for a few hours. But then the phone line went dead, and without a phone line there is no internet and blah blah blah blah blah blah. No connection for me. Oh – and the fun part is, we were supposed to have a repair person come in Sunday afternoon to fix the problem, but he apparently showed up an hour before he was supposed to and well gosh, I wasn’t there (I was at church. Sue me) and now we can’t get another appointment until Wednesday.

G:KN$%!!!@

I feel about ready to kick Aliant (that’s ‘Bell’ to those of you west of New Brunswick) really hard in their metaphorical nuts. If my apartment building didn’t have pretty darn good student deals with them, I’d definitely switch to Eastlink. As it is, I’m seriouly considering it.

So that’s my rant of the past couple weeks. You know, I had a really smooth move, I love my new apartment (so big and pretty!) I’m getting along with my roommate, classes are great, but this one thing… GAH! *breathes* I always appreciated a fast internet connection but uh… now I appreciate it more. A lot more. A LOT.

(I should mention – this post is being entirely written in a word document, which I [pray] will then upload to the beloved LJ without much fuss. I’m currently trying to send an e-mail to my sister using the corner of fervid prayer. It’s… not going well.)

Moving aside from the self-pity for one moment though (what, I can do it) I miss fandom! And especially I miss fic. But despite missing it, I haven’t been especially interested in reading most of it anymore (I’m sure the fact that it takes a HUGE amount of effort to get to the fic in the first place doesn’t – Right, no more self-pity) and I REALLY can’t seem to write it anymore. Poo. So instead I think I’m going to take up that meme that was circulating a LONG time ago, about posting some of the loose ends fic that people have lying around in their harddrive. Because I have a lot of it. I should know. It’s what I’ve been doing in my internetless spare time. That, and making my computer read aloud Shakespearian sonnets in that Robo-voice they can do. Really, I think he could have a career in the theatre. He’s starting to really get a hold of that iambic pentameter.

ANYway (*g*), here is the cream of the crop of my rejected!fic. And I won’t lie, most of it wasn’t posted for a reason. But it’s all I have right now.

So, here’s some drabbles and fragments from Firefly, Farscape, LOST, The Office and even Harry Potter. (I know, who knew?) Oh, and one very embarrassing kid!fic that, despite the obvious kid content, I think is actually pretty well written (In that overly sweet, give you cavities way.) So I’m still hiding it in the rejected!fic post. ;)

[livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar's watching Farscape! I am excited because of this! Which I totally already mentioned, but... I'm repetitive? *shrugs*

Anywho, obviously this inspired icon-making from me!

Do I win at nerd yet?
hjea: (firefly-simon blush)
Uh... hello!

So yes, I did go on a unexpected month+ long hiatus from the LJ (which is ever beloved to me, don't get me wrong) but now I'm back. Yay!!!! (Right, right?) It's funny how you can really get out of the habit of something. I was at home in the Tdot for a month (April 23 - May 23rd exactly) and while I was there, just... stuff happened. Distracting stuff. Some good, some bad, some... itchy (I'll get back to that one, but it's REALLY not what you think) but before you know it -- *poof* -- that documentation of my life/OMG!squee FANDOM-habit just flittered by the wayside. BUT NOTHING WAS ABANDONED. I STILL HEART YOU ALL. AND FANDOM. AND LIFE DOCUMENTING. S'ALL GOOD.

Blather, blather, blather )

And of course, being back in Halifax demands job/apartment hunting. AHHHHHHHH! Help.

So my lovelies, that's what I've been up to. I am really sorry that I was away for so long, and I'm keen to hear what y'all have been up to. In the meantime, I just want to leave you with some thoughts. Of the, yes - Heather is a total nerd variety.

-Finally caught up with DW episodes, and while neither 'The Lazarus Experiment' or '42' did anything for me, (am I the only one who was really expecting/wanting a Hitchhiker's Guide shout-out?) how awesome was 'Human Nature'?! I must discuss this somewhere.
-[livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar started watching Farscape! Really, really, really, REALLY hopes she keeps it up because I have so much incredible LOVE for this insane muppety space-opera.
-The Office meets the Babysitter's Club in this fic and it was the BEST THING EVER. I'm sure everyone can appreciate this. We're all mostly girls who grew up in the 80s/90s, right?
-Speaking of The Office: OMG!FINALE!SQUEE.
-Saw Pirates 3, and while I do have a lot of problems with the movie (editors: less of the blowing stuff up, more of the character/plot development. Oh, and less rocks.) I may or may not have loved the heart-rending pretty that is the Captains Turner. Yes, I am a total fangirl and yes I might have written a fic. But we'll see if it get's posted or not. But one scene in particular did inspire me to make these: Minor AWE spoilers )

C'mon. How could I resist? :D
hjea: (dr. seuss-moving mountains)
I've got a bit of a backlog, so I thought I'd share them all. I believe there's 25 here (though maybe more), but try not to look for any theme and/or rhyme + reason because there isn't any. I mean it when I say random! But oh-so-much-fun-to-make Random! :D

Randomy random joy )
hjea: (the mummy-evie is a nerd)
Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone!

Ooh, and my layout is already all green, so I've got a good head start. But what a fun holiday, eh? Doesn't matter if you're all Irish, half-Irish, kinda Irish, or you own a green shirt - today is a day for all to celebrate! Especially if one lives in a city where there are more pubs per capita than anywhere else in the country. *g* So I hope you all have a good time tonight (a good responsible time though) and have tons of fun with whatever you do. Movie, excessive amounts of drinking, nice game of scrabble... whatever. :D

On a completely different note, I watched the series finale of Stargate SG-1 the other day, and got more sad about its passing than I thought I would. I still don't think I'd go back and watch the non-Ben Browder, Claudia Black and Morena Baccarin seasons, but still... I found out that I kinda got attached. *sniffs* So then I watched/icon'd the Farscape episode, 'The Choice'. 'Cause, you know, series finales aren't sad enough.

This is the episode that, if you hadn't already, will make you abso-frickin-lutely fall in love with Claudia Black. She is amazing. PLEASE EVERYONE, WATCH FARSCAPE! )

Have a good night!

ETA: Ooh, and just for kicks (and because this post isn't random enough): John Barrowman fans, ahoy! Cap'n Jack singing Anything You Can Do! )
