holy mother confessor
Yay, time again for a few initial thoughts on this week's Seeker instalment.
So first off, I do want to stress that I LOVED it. How could I not? There was back story, there was Con Dar, there was... twirly fighting shenanigans. Gold. Buuuuuuuuuut, all that to say, I actually have a few reservations about this ep.
Hear me out: I had no problem with the execution of the plot, just the actual premise of the plot itself. As in, the Mord'Sith went to Valaria and killed all the Confessors. Now I understand that this moves the story a little closer to the books themselves, and also raises the stakes with Kahlan being the last of the Confessors (solution: HAVE BABIES), but doesn't it also render last season's "Sacrifice" kind of pointless? I love that episode, and not just because Richard spends a good chunk of it cuddling a baby (...well). But I love that the episode questioned the validity of blindly following prophecy. It shook up Zedd, and especially Kahlan's world views and allowed Richard to really start coming into a system of his own beliefs. Like he said in this very episode, he believes people can change. And following that I think he believes that people can change their fates.
(I always get Fred's awesome little speech in my head when I'm thinking along these lines: "Destiny is just another word for inevitable, and nothing's inevitable as long as you stand up, look it in the eye, and say 'you're evitable!'" &hearts Ms. Burkle)
Ultimately, I loved that "Sacrifice" ended on an unresolved note. Nobody knows if Dennee's baby will turn out to be evil or not, but it was important that the Seeker allow him to become so either way. But now we'll never know because he was killed before his first birthday. So yeah. Kinda miffed about all that. It was a nice piece of complexity to weave into the show's myth, and now it feels like the showrunners have just trashed it.
BUT OTHERWISE LOVED THE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THIS EPISODE, AND WILL GLADLY CHIME IN ON THOSE DISCUSSIONS NOW.

...And calls their mother: there are freaking bushfires mere kilometers from mum and dad's house back home D: Dad's flown out for a conference so it's just mum hosing down all the surrounding garden. Eep. I hope Seeker distracts me from this, as I do worry, no matter how much she says the wind is blowing in the other direction.
EDIT AGAIN, HOLY CRAP I'M NOT EVEN TWO MINUTES IN AND THIS IS SO AMAZING OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!

Rewatching "Sacrifice" now that I talked it all up. Still awesome! But also sad now. Poor Dennee. :(
(Although if this is another fake-out to which she returns from the dead only to die AGAIN next year... then there's going to be a lot of eyerolling *g*)

And your recaps aren't crappy! I only added that cause that's what you typed in above. Wondering if that was a typo. Which I was clearly being obtuse about. Suffice to say your recaps and AMAZINGNESS and UNICORN SPIT.
(yay, man-eating Cara getting some. Although I guess that's just one more thing for Kahlan to be grumpy about. When do we get kissy kissy time again?)

Well, at least they all died trying to protect the baby from (almost certainly) being evil in Rahlsies hands? :/ Yeah, I agree, it definitely sucks that they rendered Sacrifice moot, especially because it demonstrated Richard's sense of justice, destiny and his never-ending optimism about human nature which are kind of what drives the show. But, uhm, obviously the writers sacrificed "Sacrifice" for far more important things. Like the now legitimate need for Confessor/Seeker bbz. :D:D:D
But yeah. CAAAAAAARAAAAA. I don't really have anything interesting to add other than that CAAAAAAAARAAAA is awesome.

Agreed. Come back and be moral and caring, bb! Without being too preachy because that was getting a little tired this episode. But his "people can change" line did leave me a bit swoony. ;)

TRUFAX. CARRY ON, WRITERS.

Aaaanyway back to your issue about Dennee's bebbeh. I think the point is that the kid would have grown uo evil since Kahlan's kid grew up evil. And I don't think Rahl's influence is entirely to blame for him because Kahlan was very present in his upbringing. It's just in the boy Confessor nature to be all eval like.

...And now whether to cast Richard in the role of Rose, Martha, or Donna. Hmm. *serious ponderings*
But moving on! I'm still not convinced that Dennee's baby would have been evil. Yes, Kahlan's was, and I agree that it wasn't necessarily Darken Rahl's doing--it was in his nature. But does that still have to apply to every one of the male confessors? Where's the exception that proves the rule? Plus the whole going to Valaria where he won't have any temptation was an interesting social experiment. Maybe if male confessors can get past their adolescense without giving in, then they can learn to control their powers. Maybe not. But I liked having that possibility out there.

You do realize this is messing with my brains! As in there must be macros now! D:

I agree that it was a very interesting social experiment, but I personally find it an equally fascinating statement that all men have that darkness in them. Somehow I feel that the point of "Reckoning" was just this. That if Kahlan's kid turns evil then surely all other male Confessors must be evil too. :P Anyway who knows, if the show wanted to, they could create some sort of thing about how Dennee's kid survived. And there's always fic. ;)

I think the biggest difference between Kahlan's kid and Dennee's kid would be temptation and opportunity. First, Kahlan's kid could (and did) Confess the people around him (he made his playmate cut off his finger) whereas Dennee's kid would not be able to. His Mom is a Confessor, his Dad is already Confessed, all that's left are animals and trees on the island. He would never know the intoxicating power of having another person's will under his control. In fact, Dennee doesn't even have to TELL her son what he is until he's older (although I would maybe not reccommend that).
So I don't think we can blame Rahl entirely, I think it was that children are very impulse-based and don't really think of consequences. They want things NOW and if you had the power to get what you wanted, wouldn't you have used it when you were young?

Random, self-indulgent fic commentary/babble time: the last paragraph of Between Passion and Power (http://community.livejournal.com/lilies_pad/40262.html#cutid1) was actually written first as a drabble for Dennee/Child. But in the end I abandoned that and tweaked it for Kahlan/Child but it's one of my favourite things because it starts with the Mother finding her son with a dead bird and freaking out, thinking they've killed it, then finding out that he just found it. Although I never described it, but I hoped that readers would pick up on the relief/fear in the Mother because 1)she just thought her kid had killed an animal but he didn't, 2)shouldn't mother's love their child unconditionally/not fear their kid? THEN after the kid asks if the bird can be saved and gets a negative response, he is all like "GOOD. I WANT TO ADD IT TO MY CREEPY TROPHY SHELF" and it turns out that the Mother was maybe JUSTIFIED to be afraid and how is she going to deal with this? OH, CRAZY MALE CONFESSORS!
