The thing I love about grad school is that we get show and tell. No, seriously.

Today, our guest speaker was a man named Jowy Taylor, who has created a guitar made from 63 different pieces of Canadian heritage, from all across the country. His goal has (succesfully) been to take the guitar all across the country and the world, and expand the scope of symbols we identify as quintessentially Canadian. Check out the website for more info: http://www.sixstringnation.com/. It's so cool, it's got pieces of the Bluenose in it, of Pier 21 (yay!), Trudeau's canoe paddle, Louis Riel's schoolhouse, caribou bones, bagle racks from Montreal, a seat in Massey Hall, and tonnes more. And so many people have played it (or at least have held it) now as well; from Bruce Cockburn, to Stompin' Tom, to Feist, to Hawksley Workman, politicians from all parties (though apparently Gilles Duceppe wouldn't go near it *g*) and ordinary people all around. I played G - A - D very quickly before passing it off to the next person. ;) But there you go, our piece of cultural history for the day.

And in more show and tell news, my homework for Friday's Collections Management class is to photograph 12 objects I would put in a museum of myself. Show and tell! You just ignore the four hours of reading time I clocked in at the library today, and it's just like kindergarten!

OMG THAT IS AN AWESOMETASTIC GUITAR. What are you going to photograph for items that need to go in the museum of you? TELL!!! Surely an undergrad notebook full of doodles must make the cut. They're your original works! :D

As to grad school...ok, do they really expect us to read 1-2 novels per week per class? Cause that just seems ridiculous, wouldn't you think?

I would.

Also, amazon's shipping speeds on textbooks SUCK ASS. They're all arriving 2-3 weeks after I need them. *headdesk*

I have some ideas for the me!museum. Unfortunately, a lot of stuff is still in boxes in the living room. It's gonna suck to dig through them without really having the space yet to unpack. Basement... needs... to... be... finished... now! But great idea about the doodles! I hadn't thought of those, but now they'll def have to go in.

And ack, 1-2 novels??? That's impossible. I think that clearly calls for a case of selectively prioritizing readings. Which I'm getting the sneaky suspicion is what grad's school's all about anyway.

AND BOO ON AMAZON. I can assure you though, the U of T bookstore is not much better. Luckily, someone in my class just got the book out of the library, and scanned and e-mailed all the readings for the next couple weeks to us.

I've resorted to using the public library where I can, but OF COURSE the book I have to have read for next week isn't available except through Amazon (or paying 2x the cost at school. Alas.) I may do the buy it, read it, and return it route.

But yeah, it is impossible, right? It's not just me? PER CLASS, too. 0_o. But yeah, Dr Irvine was teasing me about needing to learn to be selective and/or read a novel in 2 hours. See how amused I'm not. thhhhpppppt.

YES TO DOODLES. AND AND AND GRYFFINDOR TSHIRT (since it was at the Historical Event of the Harry Potter premiere. :D) AND AND AND ERM. THAT THING. OF THE THINGINESS. YES.

I'm sensing a very narrow undergrad focus emerging in this Xtine-veted collection. ;PPP

BUT VERY HELPFUL, YUS. HAVE A COOKIE.

That's one neat class you've got there!

I love the inclusion of bones and stones in the guitar because sometimes Canadian history has a habit of forgetting the First Nations. I had so much fun reading about all the materials included and felt so proud that I had correctly identified the wooden nickel!

I second the request for telling us a list of the things you would put in a museum of yourself. It's a bit like that ' 10 pics from your hardrive' thing, only with real objects! I guess I'd have to think about what things inspired a change in my style (if I'm assuming that I'm in a museum for something I've created rather than in a museum for having something tragic happen to me).

Yeah, I just loved the inclusion of all sorts of eclectic things in the guitar. And how they were able to be so inclusive because they put things in the fretboard, or in the strap--and even in the guitar case. And I do think we do tend to focus on the history of European contact and settlement in this country, and we forget that we also have the stories of hundreds of different cultures whose history goes back thousands of years, and continues up until this day. It's something I often overlook as well, but I'm glad I've gotten the reminder.

And I was thinking a me!museum would make for a great meme. ;) I'll definitely include my pics once I've... figured them all out.

(And yes, our museums are totally in commeration of something awesome we've done. :D)

Two words for that guitar:

TOTALLY AWESOME.

Also, I watched all of Little White Lie. It took a while to grow on me, mainly because I find Sami really annoying, but Lauren Lopez is her usually AWESOME, and I also loved Jim and Duder.

Duder's a spy! Best spying theme ever.

I couldn't get into LWL (see above re: Sami :P) but maybe I'll give it another go.

More importantly, however, NEW BONES TOMORROW!

It improves after a while. Especially with the inclusion of Jim Because Goyle makes things better. :-D Also, tanya becomes a bigger roles later on.

Guitarguitarguitar! ♥_♥ Love it! Wow!

4 hours at the library?! Get outta my facial!

It's so cool! Yay random Canadiana!

And four hours is... not that bad. It's a lot easier to read in the library at any rate than it is in my I-don't-have-a-room-yet house.

[identity profile] deej.livejournal.com 2009-09-16 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
FOUR. HOURS. O_O If the Scoobie Gang had had you in Giles's stacks I'm pretty sure the apocali would have been fewer.

I want to say "get a room" just cuz you can't. HEE!

Also, OMG NEED NEW GLEE. SO BAD. EEEE!

Also2, I have a secret agent at work who's got Chuck s2, which thrills me to bits. Must have more Chuck/Sarah!

This is grad school baby. I think four hours is on the minimum side of things. And it also depends on what you're doing with those hours, right? I always spend a good amount of time flipping through books before I finally buckle down to the actual reading.

Roooooooooooooooooom. *wants*

AND EEE, CHUCK!!! I VERY MUCH APPROVE. AND IF YOU THOUGHT S1 WAS SHIPPY... OH BOY. :DDD
